Mahj Life at Silverleaf

Mahj Life at Silverleaf events are independently organized by Michele Frizzell and are not sponsored or operated by Silverleaf. Many thanks to the Silverleaf team for giving us such a fantastic place to gather, play mah jongg, and enjoy time together.

Welcome to Mahj Life at Silverleaf!

A few quick steps will help you get connected and know what to expect before joining us for play.

1. Join our Facebook group
Our private Facebook group is the hub for event updates, conversations, and RSVPs. Join the group to stay connected, and let us know when you’re coming.

2. Read the Charter
Next, take a few minutes to read our Charter. It explains how our group operates, what you can expect when you play with us, and what we expect from one another.

3. Check the Calendar
Ready to play? Take a look at the calendar to see what’s coming up. We offer Open Play and Hardcore Play throughout the month, so choose the event that fits your experience and interests.

Because seating is limited, be sure to RSVP for the game night you plan to attend.

What to Expect

Mahj Life at Silverleaf brings together people who enjoy playing mah jongg, meeting other players, and spending time around the table. Games are hosted by Michele Frizzell and may include Silverleaf residents and invited guests.

Our goal is simple: casual games, good company, and a playing environment where everyone knows what to expect.

Games We Play

We’ll begin with American mah jongg played according to National Mah Jongg League rules.

As our community develops, other mah jongg variants may be added based on player interest.

Open Play

Open Play is social play for players who are comfortable with the fundamentals of the game.

These sessions do not include lessons or coaching. Players should be able to independently participate in the flow of the game, including the Charleston when applicable, picking and discarding, making exposures, using jokers, and recognizing mah jongg.

Experience levels will vary. By participating in Open Play, players agree to play with others regardless of skill level and to be patient and respectful of differences in experience and playing style.

Open Play is a place to play, not a place to evaluate how well someone else plays.

Hardcore Play

Hardcore Play is for experienced players who enjoy a faster pace and more competitive style of play.

Players should be comfortable completing a game in approximately 15 minutes and keeping pace without coaching or extended discussion during play.

Hardcore Play isn’t about being unfriendly or unforgiving. It’s about maintaining game momentum. Players who enjoy taking more time to consider their options are welcome at Open Play instead.

Group Culture

Whether we’re playing Open Play or Hardcore Play, good decorum and sportsmanship matter.

Players are expected to stay engaged with the game, minimize distractions, handle tiles and equipment with care, and treat one another respectfully. Rule questions and disagreements should be handled calmly and without making them personal.

For American mah jongg, National Mah Jongg League rules are our default. We won’t introduce house rules at individual tables. That gives players a consistent playing experience and avoids having to relearn the rules depending on where they sit.

Seating & Rotation

Players should expect to play with different people. Seating and table rotation may be used depending on attendance so that everyone has an opportunity to mix, mingle, and play.

Lessons & Coaching

Regular games are not instructional sessions. Players should meet the experience level described for the scheduled game.

That doesn’t mean players can’t help one another with an occasional rules question. It simply means the table shouldn’t expect another player to provide a lesson or ongoing coaching during social play.

RSVP & Attendance

Because our playing space is limited to 24 seats, an RSVP is required for each game night you plan to attend. If your plans change, please update your RSVP as soon as possible so your seat can be offered to another player. Once an event reaches capacity, additional players may be placed on a waitlist.

To RSVP, visit the Mahj Life at Silverleaf Facebook group, find the event for the date you’d like to attend, and select “Going” to reserve your seat.

Our First Open Play!

The tiles are coming out! Join us for the very first Mahj Life at Silverleaf Wednesday Night Mahj.

Wednesday, October 21 from 6–9 PM

We’ll be playing American mah jongg using National Mah Jongg League rules. Open Play is for players who are comfortable with the fundamentals and ready to enjoy an evening around the table with players of varying skill levels.

This is social play rather than a lesson or coached session, so bring your current NMJL card and come ready to play, mix, mingle, and meet some fellow mah jongg enthusiasts.

Silverleaf residents and invited guests are welcome.

To RSVP, go to the Mahj Life at Silverleaf Facebook group to let us know you are coming!

Co-Host Needed — November 18

I have a speaking engagement on November 18, so I won’t be available to organize Open Play that evening.

Rather than cancel, I’d love for a member to step in as an organizer for the evening. The role is simply to help open things up, welcome players, and keep the evening running according to our usual format. I’ll make sure you have everything you need ahead of time.

If someone is willing to co-host, please let me know. If we don’t have a volunteer by November 11, we’ll cancel the November 18 game night.

As the group grows, having a few members willing to serve as organizers will also give us more flexibility to keep events on the calendar when I’m unavailable—and may eventually help us add more opportunities to play.
