How Can We Help?
I got doxed! (Letter 8)
I called for a discard to make my third exposure and another player announced to the table the hand I was playing! Why would someone do this and i it against the rules?
Doxed & Disconcerted
Dear Doxed & Disconcerted,
Sometimes, players get disappointed about their performance when playing mah jongg, and their bad attitude can manifest in what they say and do. In poker, this is called going on tilt, and it can have a negative effect on others. Going on tilt can happen in mah jongg too. Openly sharing insights during a game is really bad form, and there are currently no rules that govern it. This particular sportsmanship issue falls under the excessive talking category. Here is a wiki article with what the league says about it: https://mahjlife.com/wiki/etiquette-and-sportshanship-article-115/
The best way to handle issues with group dynamics like this is to have a meeting of the minds where everyone has a voice. In the meeting, members should be kind yet frank about any issues. Topics for discussion should include culture, pace, sportsmanship, house rules, and how to handle issues if they occur. Use the consensus and create a charter to protect the integrity of the group. Current and new members must agree to play by the rules in the charter. If someone disagrees, they are not a good fit and should find another group.
