Biography
Karen has been teaching mah jongg at the local community education center since 2011. She also runs afternoon mah jongg groups where she facilitates play and offers a short instructional session each week to move players forward in their game, e.g. notice your behavior while you are waiting for the last tile, practice reading the card in patterns that are unique to the specific card.
Karen has an excellent reputation in the community as the teacher who will give you not only instruction but also the history and meaning of the tiles and a love of the game. This comes from 45 years of classroom science teaching experience. She also volunteers to teach at the retirement center where she lives because she knows how important the game is to the mental health of the elderly. At 74 years of age, calisthenics for the brain is as important as it is for the body.
Karen abides strictly by American Mah Jongg League rules and can hear players cheerfully saying, you better rack that tile. She teaches on all levels and plays online daily. Mah jongg has become a part of her identity and brings joy to life.
