Biography

Gwen West is an American Mahjong instructor and coach and the creator of Racks, Tiles & Roses, where her love of the game meets her passion for teaching and bringing people together around the Mahjong table.

With a professional background in IT and software education, Gwen brings years of experience helping adults understand concepts that may initially feel complicated or overwhelming. She applies that same clear, patient, step-by-step approach to American Mahjong, breaking the game into manageable pieces while helping players understand not only what to do, but why.

Known for her warm, approachable teaching style, Gwen believes learning Mahjong should be both educational and fun. Her lessons combine a strong foundation in National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules with practical game strategy, hand development, table etiquette, and an emphasis on building confidence and thoughtful decision-making.

Whether you’re picking up Mahjong tiles for the very first time or looking to strengthen your skills, Gwen’s goal is to help every player become more confident, capable, and comfortable at the Mahjong table.

Gwen offers in-person private and small-group lessons in her home, as well as virtual lessons via Zoom.
