Dawn Walker
Biography
Dawn has been passionate about mah jongg since learning the game at age 25. More than three decades later, she continues to share that passion as an experienced instructor, helping students of all ages and skill levels discover the strategy, enjoyment, and sense of community that make mah jongg so special.
What began as informal lessons around her kitchen table evolved into a comprehensive teaching program featuring a structured curriculum, handouts, slide presentations, and instructional videos. Known for her patience, enthusiasm, and engaging teaching style, Dawn has earned a reputation for making mah jongg accessible, enjoyable, and approachable for all learners.
As a credentialed chef and culinary instructor, Dawn brings extensive teaching experience to her mah jongg classes. Having worked with students ranging from young children to adults, she understands that every individual learns differently. She excels at identifying learning styles and adapting her instruction to meet the needs of each student. Whether teaching beginners, helping experienced players refine their skills, or supporting those who benefit from additional accommodations, Dawn is committed to helping every player succeed.
Dawn believes mah jongg is for everyone and welcomes students from all backgrounds and life experiences. She values the game’s unique ability to bring people together, foster meaningful relationships, and build community through shared experiences.
Over the years, Dawn has taught countless players, including her four children, each of whom learned the game at a young age. Many of her former students have gone on to teach others, extending her passion for the game across generations and communities.
An active member of the mah jongg community, Dawn regularly plays with groups throughout Los Angeles and California’s Central Coast. She has organized tournaments, hosted mah jongg weekends, and played American mah jongg around the world aboard cruise ships traveling to destinations from Alaska to Australia. She also participated in a mah jongg exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, helping celebrate the game’s rich history and cultural significance.
For Dawn, mah jongg is more than a game—it is a way to connect people, build confidence, and create lasting friendships. While many people can play mah jongg well, Dawn believes effective teaching is a unique skill. Sharing her knowledge and helping others develop a lifelong love of the game remains one of her greatest joys.
