Teach with Integrity, Confidence, and a Dash of Sass

Meet I-SAS, the Instructor Self-Assessment System designed exclusively for members of the Mahj Life Instructor Guild. It’s not a test—it’s a professional integrity check that helps you see exactly where your teaching confidence aligns with your knowledge and experience. I-SAS blends reflection and applied scenarios so you can teach with clarity, confidence, and credibility—at every level.

What Makes It Sassy?

In Mahj Life style, sassy means self-aware, assured, supportive, and spirited. It’s not about attitude—it’s about attuned confidence. It says:

“I know my level, I own my strengths, and I’m not afraid to keep learning.”

Part 1: Reflection (Self-Awareness)

A guided questionnaire to help you assess your confidence across three pillars:

  • Game Strategies & Skills
  • Sportsmanship

Your responses are fully confidential—this part is about honest self-reflection, not performance.

Part 2: Scenario-Based Quizzes (Applied Competence)

Real-world teaching situations put your knowledge into action.

  • Passing Score: 80 % or higher per section
  • Unlimited retakes for continued growth
  • Results visible only to you and Guild administration

You’ll walk away with a clear picture of your strengths and where to grow next.

Why It Matters

Integrity isn’t about limits—it’s about alignment.
I-SAS keeps our teaching community strong by ensuring every instructor represents their level authentically and teaches with confidence rooted in understanding.

Student Skill Levels in the Instructor Directory

The Mahj Life Instructor Directory includes three student skill levels—Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced—to help players find instructors who are prepared to teach at their level. The I-SAS provides an opportunity to reflect on your current knowledge and teaching experience, ensuring your directory profile accurately reflects the type of instruction you are prepared to offer today. As you gain experience and participate in Mahj Life training opportunities, you are welcome to update your profile to reflect your continued growth as an instructor.

Beginner
You can confidently teach the fundamentals of American mah jongg so new players can participate in a full game.
You can explain the structure of the NMJL card, the Charleston, exposures, calling tiles, and the basic flow of play.
You can guide beginners through early decision-making and help them develop comfort at the table.

Intermediate
You can help players who already know the fundamentals strengthen their decision-making and hand development.
You can answer rule questions clearly and apply NMJL rules consistently during play.
You can guide players in refining their tile choices, discards, and awareness of the game as it progresses.

Advanced
You can teach high-level strategy and discuss complex or unusual situations that arise in play.
You can guide players through edge cases, defensive thinking, and strategic adjustments during the game.
