Dealing with Quick-Pickers (Letter 24)

We have a player in our group who consistently hovers her hand over the wall, ready to draw her tile, before the previous player has finished their turn. Specifically, she starts to reach before the discard is named and placed on the table—leaving the rest of us barely a second to call the tile before she picks hers up.

It seems more like a habit than an intentional rush. Interestingly, she only does this once she’s settled on her hand and is in “call mode.” When she’s still rearranging or unsure, she waits appropriately.

I’ve never encountered this behavior before and would like to address it gently. I play with her twice a week and plan to talk with her privately—not in front of others—but I’d appreciate guidance on how to bring it up respectfully. Is there a rule or etiquette standard I can reference?

Keeping the Peace

Dear Keeping the Peace,

I played with a group recently, and one of the players did the same thing. Quick-picking and hovering can throw the pace off, making it feel like there’s no time to call a discard.

Here are two ways to handle it, depending on what feels most comfortable:

Private chat with the player: You could say something simple like, “Would you mind pausing just a moment after discards so everyone has time to call? It makes the game feel more balanced.” Sometimes a quiet, friendly word is all that’s needed.

Addressing the whole group: If you’d rather make it a table courtesy, here’s a little announcement you could use at the start of play:

“For smoother play, let’s all agree on a simple courtesy: after each discard is placed and announced, we’ll pause briefly before anyone picks. Hands stay off the wall until that moment, and we’ll also keep our hands out of the discard area so everyone can clearly see the tiles. That way, the pace stays fair and no one feels rushed.”
Both of these have worked for me.

Hope this helps — and good on you for keeping the games fun and fair!
