Commentary: When a player calls a discard resulting in a mah jongg in error, players may be skipped in the process. The player with mah jongg in error is disqualified so they stop playing and the game continues with the player to the right of the disqualified player. This is not explicitly written in the rules about mah jongg in error. However, the league says the game “continues” (i.e., advance, progress, carry on, go on) which means “to resume after interruption.”

Some players think the player to the right of the discarder should go next because of the mah jongg in error, but that is not correct. The league confirmed in a letter that after a player declares mah jongg in error, they stop playing and the game continues with the player to their right.

Shout-out to Suzie H. for sharing the situation.

When there is an infraction resulting in a disqualification, the game continues with the player to the right of the disqualified player (01/2024 phone call to the league).

Question from a Player: The person to my left threw a tile that was called by the person to my right for mah jongg but the hand was invalid so it was a mah jongg in error. Who’s turn is it? I thought it was mine but the person across from me thought it was their turn.

Answer from the NMJL:  When a player declares Mah Jongg in error and exposes the hand, the hand is declared a “Dead” Hand. The disqualified player discontinues picking and discarding. The other players continue to play.
