WALLS PUSHED OUT IN CLOCKWISE ORDER BEGINNING WITH EAST (Article 176)
Commentary: In American mah jongg, East (player 1) rolls the dice to break the wall. The sum of the numbers on the dice is used to break the wall. The tiles on the left of the break are pushed out by East. When the tiles have been depleted from the first wall, the next wall in clockwise order is pushed out by the player to the left.
Question from a Player: Which player pushes their wall out to begin the game?
Answer from the NMJL: After rolling the dice and counting off the corresponding number of tiles to be used for the last wall, East pushes out the wall first, followed by the subsequent walls to the left of East.

Other answers from the NMJL:
During play, after East’s wall has been depleted, the player to the left pushes out their wall. Picking from the Walls goes to the left. PLAY TO THE RIGHT, PICK FROM THE LEFT.
