Most Westerners misunderstand the wind to seat assignments at the table because our compass follows magnetic North and we navigate by land. The rotation we use is North-East-South-West.

Mah Jongg originated in China so we use their compass when playing the game, not ours. They navigate by the stars so they look up. East is the Dealer (Player 1), to their right is South (Player 2), to their right is West (Player 3), and to their right is North (Player 4). Turns are taken in this order as well.
