RAISING THE STAKES WITH AN ANTE (ARTICLE 234)

An “ante” is a small amount of money participants contribute to a pot before the game begins. Since each player has a stake in the game, they are likely to increase their level of defensive play.

If a game ends in a draw, the ante grows. If a player declares mah jongg, they receive the pot in addition to the standard payment.
