JOKER-UP (ARTICLE 217)
The purpose of the joker-up house rule is to create suspense and interest. Before building the wall, East sets a joker aside. The walls are built with South’s wall (Player 2, South, right of East) temporarily having one less tile on the far top right. East rolls the dice to break the wall and the tiles are distributed to the players. East rolls the dice again to determine a random place in South’s wall to place the joker. South counts from the right of the break to the right the total number of pips on the dice. The tile on the top level is removed and the joker is placed right-side up in its place. South takes the tile that was removed and they use it to complete their wall. Another variation is to place the joker-up in North’s wall so the joker-up is in the deal.
