Biography
In 2018, Shanda, a mother of three, was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Despite the challenges, she found joy in playing mah jongg, a game that brought her and her mother happiness. However, after her mother died in 2020, the joy faded, and mah jongg became a memory. Shanda’s friend encouraged her to reconnect with the game, and it became a way to keep her mother’s spirit alive. Now, Shanda is informally teaching mah jongg, helping others discover the game that has meant so much to her. She starts with the official National Mah Jongg League rules to give new players a solid foundation before introducing informal house rules. Living in the growing mah jongg community of Northwest Arkansas, Shanda is eager to expand her skills and knowledge to help others fall in love with the game. She believes mah jongg is about connection, strategy, and finding joy in the simple things, and honoring her mom’s memory in the most joyful way possible.
