Jill Thomas
Biography
Jill is the founder of The Charleston Coach, where she brings a fresh, approachable take on American mahjong to the Washington, D.C. area and beyond. A lifelong fan of board and card games, Jill believes in the power of play to spark connection—and she’s built her teaching style around that spirit of laughter, learning, and belonging.
By day, Jill works full-time in communications; by night and on weekends, she transforms into The Charleston Coach—traveling to homes, clubhouses, and social gatherings with everything needed to introduce new players to the joy of mahjong. Based in Bethesda, she offers mobile lessons and private events throughout the DMV, creating relaxed, welcoming spaces where total beginners can learn the game with confidence.
Jill discovered mahjong during a busy season of life and was immediately drawn to its rhythm, strategy, and sense of community. As a mom of two young girls, she loved the mental challenge and social energy—and saw an opportunity to help others connect through tiles. What began as a hobby quickly grew into a calling: to make mahjong feel modern, meaningful, and accessible for today’s learners.
With a background in writing, coaching, and storytelling, Jill brings natural clarity and warmth to her lessons. She’s known for breaking down the card, simplifying the rules, and helping players feel empowered—even if they’ve never picked up a tile. Whether she’s teaching a private group of four or hosting a 12-person birthday party, Jill leads with humor, patience, and joy.
The Charleston Coach is more than just a mahjong lesson—it’s a full experience. Jill travels to clients with everything provided, guiding players through gameplay while creating an atmosphere that feels equal parts game night, group hang, and feel-good workshop. Her students describe her as down-to-earth, encouraging, and joyful, and her goal is always the same: to help people learn, laugh, and love the game.
As a member of the Mahj Life Instructor Guild, Jill is excited to collaborate with fellow instructors who are passionate about mahjong’s resurgence. She’s committed to making the game approachable for all ages and skill levels—and helping it thrive as a joyful tradition passed from one table to the next.
When she’s not working, teaching, or corralling her daughters, you’ll find Jill planning her next pop-up event, experimenting with card games, or sharing a snack plate over tiles with friends.
