Francie Likis
Biography
Francie Likis has been enchanted with mah jongg since the first time she played. Her favorite aspects are the friends she has made through the game, and the mental challenge mah jongg provides. She plays multiple times weekly with a local group of very experienced players and finds this and playing online daily to be some of the best ways she sharpens her mah jongg skills.
With more than three decades of experience as an educator and mentor for graduate students and health care providers, Francie brings a wealth of teaching expertise and enthusiasm to being a mah jong instructor. She excels at making complex concepts approachable while keeping classes enjoyable and engaging. Francie teaches American mah jongg using National Mah Jongg League rules with the Mahjong Magnolias, a group of women who lead classes across the Alabama coast and western Florida Panhandle. The Mahjong Magnolias champion women supporting women, and they give back to their community through Mahjong for a Mission fundraising events.
Francie received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Vanderbilt University, and her doctorate in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a nurse practitioner and nurse-midwife, the co-creator and co-editor of an award-winning gynecology textbook now in its fourth edition, and Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health. When she is not playing or teaching mah jongg, Francie enjoys having adventures with her husband Zan, needlepointing, reading, and traveling.
