How Can We Help?
WHEN STAGING BECOMES COMMITMENT (ARTICLE 302)
Commentary: According to Mah Jongg Made Easy (2024, page 17), a player commits to using a discard when they place the claimed discard on top of the rack or when they place tiles on the flat part of their rack after claiming a discard.
If a player takes tiles from their concealed hand and places them on the flat portion of the rack without turning them face up, can the player change their mind because the tiles’ faces were never revealed? The League says no. Once tiles are placed on the rack for an exposure, the player is committed, even if those tiles are not face up.
This distinction is important: Commitment is determined by the player’s action, not whether the other players have seen the faces of the tiles.
Calling for a discard alone does not establish commitment. However, once the player places tiles from their hand on flat part or top of the rack to make an exposure, they cannot retract the claim simply because the tiles are still face down.
Question from a Player: A player calls a discard and has not yet taken it off the table. She proceeds to take tiles from her hand and places them towards her, standing up on the flat part of her rack and then changes her mind. The other two players said she could not put them back and renege on the claim for the discard. She said nobody saw the tiles faces so it was not yet part of an exposure. I thought that if the tiles put up were touching the flat that it was past the point to change her mind. MJME states on page 17 that a player is committed to taking a tile once the called tile has been placed on top of the rack or tiles have been exposed from the hand. The position was that the faces were not exposed, but were exposed by quantity. I say the tiles were put in an area of the rack/table that is dedicated and reserved for only exposures or completed hands. What is your position regarding this situation?
Answer from the NMJL: A player is committed to an exposure once tiles have been placed on top of the rack. It does not matter that she has not exposed it face up.
