Commentary: 

Abstract:  When East player (the only player with 14 tiles) has Mah Jongg after the Charleston, it is called an “Earthly Hand.” If this occurs, it is considered a self-picked mah jongg and the winner is paid double by all players.

Question from a player:  What is an Earthly Hand?

Answer from the NMJL: If you are East and have Mah Jongg after the Charleston, you may declare Mah Jongg immediately. This is referred to as the “Earthly Hand”. It is considered a self-picked Mah Jongg, and the winner collects double from each player.
