Commentary: When a player discards the same tile as the previous player, they can name the discard normally or say “same.”

Question from a player: Player A discards a 1 dot. Player B discards a 1 dot and names it “same.” Is this permitted?

Answer from the NMJL: It is permissible for a follow-up tile to be named in three ways:

  1. “Same” is totally permissible in today’s rulings (1986 rules have been altered in many areas).*
  2. The name of the actual tile may always be called.
  3. In the case of a joker being discarded, the first 2 rules always apply and the word “joker” may be applied here.

* The last mention of this was in the 1991 NMJL Bulletin and it is not in Mah Jongg Made Easy 2024.

Other answers from the NMJL:

“A follow-up tile should be named by the discarder…not the word “same.”
