Naming Discards – Tomayto, Tomahto (Letter 5)

Dear Hoptoi,

Someone I know names their discard with the number and the plural suit. I told them that most people just say the number and the singular suit. Another player calls the 1 bam, “birdy bam” and it makes me cringe every time. Is there a correct way to name discards?

Naming discards – tomato, tomato, and it is what it is, albeit annoying at times. You have to decide whether or not playing with someone who uses unconventional terms or whose behavior makes you uncomfortable is a deal breaker. If you leave the game unaffected, stay. If you leave the game feeling frustrated or annoyed, find another group because, eventually, it could seed a bitter root, overgrow, and affect your life.
