HOW TO EXCHANGE A JOKER (Article 75)

Recognizing the opportunity for a joker exchange can be exciting. Take care because if the process is not followed, a player’s hand can be declared dead. A joker exchange can only be done after a player has officially started their turn in one of three ways:

1. Picking a tile from the wall and racking it in the sloped part of their rack.
2. Picking a tile from the wall and requesting a joker exchange.
3. Claiming a discard and then placing it on the flat part of their rack or exposing tiles from the hand. 

If a player sees an opportunity for a joker exchange and attempts to do the exchange for an exposure or mah jongg before starting their turn, another player can declare their hand dead.
