How Can We Help?
ARRANGEMENT OF THE DISCARD SPACE (ARTICLE 227)
No League rule governs how players must arrange or manage the discard space, so stacking, grouping, or otherwise arranging discards is permissible. Likewise, there is no requirement to create or maintain a particular discard formation. Just because you can create a formation, however, doesn’t mean you should.
The standard practice is simply to discard into available open space, naturally resulting in scattered discards. As walls move and the available space changes, those discards may also be displaced.
There’s an important distinction here: players are expected to observe the game and use the information available to them. Deliberately grouping or stacking like tiles to make it easier to determine what remains in the wall turns the discard space from a natural record of play into a tracking aid.
Some groups develop their own preferences for managing the discard space, and that is their choice. However, a group preference should not be mistaken for an official rule—or imposed on others as one.
This is one reason I encourage players to learn standard procedures from the beginning. A shortcut may seem harmless or helpful when learning, but once it becomes habitual, it can easily be mistaken for standard play.
