The AMJ Quest Rules Trek is designed to help instructors build confidence in applying National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules accurately and consistently. As part of the CPD-accredited Merit Program for Instructors (MPI), this competency-based learning program strengthens your understanding of official rules through structured study, authentic game scenarios, and practical assessment.
The learning program includes a comprehensive study guide, optional monthly Q&A sessions, and an open-book examination based on real-game situations that challenge you to apply—not simply recall—NMJL rules. Participants who successfully achieve a passing score of 80% or higher earn a Mahj Life Certificate of Competency and microcredential, recognizing their demonstrated proficiency in rules interpretation and application.
Here are the trek objectives:
- Demonstrate understanding of the official NMJL rules
- Analyze complex game scenarios and apply the appropriate NMJL rules to ensure correct gameplay and scoring.
- Distinguish between house rules and official NMJL rules to help players understand the differences.
The exam format is multiple-choice, featuring gameplay scenarios, with a passing grade of 80%. The content for the exam is sourced from Mah Jongg Made Easy, the official guidebook by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), and Mahj Life materials created by Michele Frizzell, a seasoned expert with over 50 years of experience in playing various versions of mah jongg and other mind-sport games.
