Commentary: Players are skipped in the process when a player picks out of turn. The player who picked out of turn is disqualified, so they stop playing, and the game continues with the player to the right of the disqualified player. This is not explicitly written in the rules about mah jongg in error. However, the league says the game “continues” (i.e., advance, progress, carry on, go on), which means “to resume after interruption.”

In summary, when an infraction results in a disqualification, the game continues with the player to the right of the disqualified player (01/2024 phone call to the league).

Question from a player: When a player picks from the wall, racks the tile, and discards out of turn: I know the out-of-turn player should be disqualified. From where does play resume? To the right of the disqualified player, or does play revert back to the player(s) who were skipped?

Answer from the NMJL: The player to the right of the last action taken is next.
