Learning Lab
The Learning Lab is a multi-faceted service designed to help:
- Players get clear, respectful answers to their questions
- Instructors exercise their teaching voice in a safe setting
- Mentors strengthen their leadership skills
The Learning Lab thrives in our private Facebook group, where players know they’ll be treated with respect and care by vetted instructors.
Now also on YouTube!
Not everyone uses Facebook—so we’re expanding access through weekly livestreams. These sessions are spontaneous and interactive, with questions from viewers answered in real time. If questions run quiet, we’ll explore prepared topics to keep the learning flowing.
- Player Edition: Tuesdays at 1:00 PM ET
- Instructor Edition: Thursdays at 1:00 PM ET

For Players: Get Started and Grow
The Learning Lab Development Framework
Two Checkpoints. One Clear Path Forward.
Growth in mah jongg does not happen in a straight line.
Some players struggle because the game feels overwhelming.
Some feel stuck because decisions seem unclear.
Others play comfortably but plateau and want to refine their performance.
The Learning Lab Development Framework was created to support players at each of these moments.
Inside the framework are two structured assessments:
- EVA — Early Viability Assessment
- ELE — Experience Level Evaluation
Each serves a different purpose. Not every player needs both.
EVA — Early Viability Assessment
Reframing Your Game Performance
EVA is designed for players who feel frustrated, uncertain, or discouraged somewhere along the learning curve.
It does not evaluate skill. It reveals how the game currently feels to you.
EVA stabilizes the mindset. It helps transform “I’m not playing well” into clear, actionable awareness.
EVA is most helpful when:
- You feel overwhelmed
- You hesitate to commit
- Table pace disrupts your thinking
- You’re considering giving up
- You need a confidence reset
Not every player needs EVA — but when frustration appears, it provides clarity before discouragement sets in.
ELE — Experience Level Evaluation
Understanding Your Experience Level
ELE evaluates how you navigate the full rhythm of a game, and it measures skill fluency. It identifies where you are already strong and where your next layer of growth is waiting.
ELE is ideal when:
• You want structured developmental feedback
• You feel ready to grow intentionally
• You’ve plateaued
• You’re preparing for tournament play
• You want measurable progress over time
How the Two Work Together
EVA asks: Why does this feel hard?
ELE asks: Where is the skill gap?
Sometimes, mindset friction blocks skill development. Sometimes skill gaps create frustration.
The Learning Lab Development Framework allows instructors to determine which tool best supports your next step.
You may take one.
You may take both.
You may retake them over time.
Which Should You Start With?
The Goal
Neither EVA nor ELE is a test.
Neither assigns a label.
Both are designed to reduce frustration, increase clarity, and help you enjoy mah jongg with confidence and direction.
The Learning Lab Development Framework exists to support your growth — wherever you are in the journey.
What Is a Learning Lab Admin?
Learning Lab Admins are vetted Mahj Life Instructors who are approved to answer player questions in this group. You’ll see a green Admin badge next to their name on posts and comments.
They are trained to respond with:
- Clarity rooted in National Mah Jongg League rules
- Encouragement that builds confidence
- Consistency with the quality of lessons when teaching
If someone doesn’t have the Admin badge, please don’t follow their advice, even if it sounds helpful. We want to keep this space safe, accurate, and welcoming for all learners.
