Trish Surfus
Biography
Like many would-be players, Trish spent years wanting to learn mahjong—but couldn’t find a class, teacher, or tile-slinging auntie to show her the ropes. So she did what any mildly unhinged, Type-A overachiever might do: she taught herself. After an obsessive deep dive—complete with instructor training from Mahjong Molly and certification through Oh My Mahjong—Trish now runs Mahj in Bloom, a thriving mahjong teaching practice rooted in approachability, celebration, and connection.
With a professional background in marketing and higher education, Trish brings a signature blend of clarity, charisma, and confidence-building to every class she teaches. Her lesson series—ranging from Mahj 101 to advanced strategy topics like Charleston tactics and table talk—is designed for modern learners who want to feel empowered, not intimidated.
Beyond instruction, Trish’s true gift lies in community-building. A natural connector, she’s transformed her love of gathering people into something special—leading mahjong classes in breweries, homes, and art studios; hosting open play nights with sticker passports; and creating inclusive spaces for players of all levels. Her warm, witty, and no-gatekeeping-allowed approach has made Mahj in Bloom a go-to destination for curious beginners and seasoned tile nerds alike.
When she’s not teaching mahjong, Trish serves as the Director of Trade Marketing at Oliver Winery and teaches a capstone course at Indiana University. True to form, she brings her all-or-nothing energy to everything she does—and the mahjong world is better for it.
