Patricia Ford
Biography
Based in Memphis, Tennessee, Pat discovered the fascinating game of mah jongg in the fall of 2020 when a neighbor invited her to join a small startup group at the community clubhouse. What began as a casual curiosity quickly became a passion—one that has since grown into a thriving tri-state community spanning Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
Alongside several others, Pat learned the basics from a veteran player at the JCC and soon began organizing her own sessions. Under her leadership, those early gatherings blossomed into a dynamic network of weekly clubhouse and senior center games, as well as monthly “Lunch and Play” meetups at local restaurants—where lively conversation and friendly competition are always on the menu.
Her commitment to inclusion, learning, and connection has earned Pat recognition as a respected mentor within the Mah Jongg Life Instructor Guild. She is known for her enthusiasm, creativity, and ability to inspire players of all ages and skill levels. Whether she’s leading a lively tournament or guiding a beginner through their first Charleston, Pat’s teaching is marked by patience, clarity, and contagious joy.
As an instructor, Pat strives to make learning accessible, fun, and confidence-building. Her classes—such as Intro to Mah Jongg, Beginner’s Luck, BAM IT! (intermediate), and Snacks & Craks (advanced)—consistently fill up, with waiting lists maintained for new sessions. She uses vibrant visual aids, colorful handouts, and one-on-one coaching, often supported by table helpers who are former students themselves.
Several of Pat’s students have since gone on to start their own mah jongg groups, further expanding the game’s reach across the region. Seeing new players achieve their first mah jongg remains one of Pat’s greatest rewards. Through her instruction, events, and mentorship, she continues to foster a welcoming, ever-growing community united by the game she loves.
