Mary Ellen is an enthusiastic American mah jongg instructor who teaches with National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules, emphasizing strategy, etiquette, and the joy of play. With a background in professional licensure, development, and adult education, she brings expertise and warmth to every lesson, particularly in her passion for senior learning and community-building.

She believes that whether you’re a first-time player or a seasoned pro, every tile is an invitation—to connect, belong, and honor the cultural story of mah jongg, now a century strong in the United States. Through teaching, she fosters spaces where friendships form and community thrives, one Mahj at a time.

Mary Ellen offers in-person lessons and workshops, including customized programs for groups seeking a collaborative, game-based activity. Through her business, Mahjong Community, LLC, she also curates the social media account @mahjcommunity, where she shares inspiration, strategy, and beautifully styled tablescapes.
