Katie Whitten
Biography
Although Katie began playing mah jongg in July 2025, she quickly immersed herself in learning the rules and fundamentals of the game. Through dedication and study, she formed a thriving group of 25 players who meet regularly at a local church. Known within the group as the go-to resource for rulings and rule clarity, she approaches the game as a true NMJL purist. The only documented house rule her group uses is allowing a Charleston in three-handed play.
Katie’s goal in teaching is not profit, but participation. She charges only a minimal fee to cover materials and focuses on building confidence, accuracy, and appreciation for the game. Encouraged by others to teach, she will begin offering lessons in January 2026 with one simple hope: to help more people discover and love mah jongg as much as she does.
