Jodie Mercer
Biography
Jodie Mercer is a Mah jongg instructor and retired public school teacher who teaches American mah jongg using National Mah Jongg League rules. Jodie’s 38 years of public school teaching experience provides a teaching strategy that includes breaking the lesson into small chunks to achieve overall understanding of the game. She also provides skill drills for practice. Jodie believes that American Mah Jongg is a vehicle for building memory and game strategy that can be enjoyed at all ages.
When Jodie is not teaching the game or supporting new players, she enjoys building the American Mah Jongg community through the Cherokee County Mah Jongg group by planning public and private events where people can bond over the game and build lasting friendships. She is also a NMJL Collector representing The Georgia Alliance for Breast Cancer. Her collaboration and 2-Day Walker status with the GABC can be seen at many of her public events.
After retiring in 2023, Jodie made it her goal to learn American Mah Jongg and, in 2025, develop a community of players through The Cherokee County American Mah Jongg Facebook group. This public group is growing rapidly and offers lessons, social playing events and tournaments.
