Jen Boswell
Biography
Jen has been a mah jongg instructor since 2020 and considers it a privilege to teach others this fascinating game. She works with individuals, small groups, and larger classes—both in person and online—covering everything from beginner basics to advanced strategy and tournament play.
With a structured, linear teaching style, Jen makes sure students understand the details and rules of American mah jongg, setting them up for success whether they choose to play socially or competitively. She focuses first on National Mah Jongg League rules, then introduces common table rules once students have a strong foundation. Lessons are both thorough and fun, with clear instruction, guided play, and even strategy practice. Students receive written materials authored by Jen for reference, and she remains a resource afterward—always available for questions or clarification.
An avid player herself, Jen enjoys playing several times a week in social games, leagues, and tournaments. She often shares different setups with her students—tiles, racks, and mats—and helps them select their own if they wish. To her, mah jongg is about more than tiles on a table: it’s about connection—to the game’s history and culture, to the community of players, and to the friendships it creates. She credits mah jongg with bringing joy, energy, and lifelong friends into her life—and she loves helping others discover the same.
