Barbara’s love for Mahjong began in childhood when she watched her mother passionately host games. She eagerly set up tables, arranged candy dishes, and welcomed guests—though bedtime often cut her participation short. From her room, she listened to the quiet pauses, the triumphant cry of “MAH JONGG!” and the laughter that followed, creating memories that would shape her lifelong connection to the game.
Now retired in Ocean County, NJ, Barbara plays and teaches at every opportunity. Known for her kind, patient, and organized approach, she has guided many students in building a strong foundation. Her deep knowledge, strategic insights, and commitment to researching even the trickiest questions make her a trusted mentor. She is also passing the tradition on to her granddaughters, ensuring that the game remains a cherished part of her family for generations to come.
Barbara teaches according to National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules, which have governed the game since 1937. Beyond strategy, mahjong fosters lasting friendships and social connections. Studies show it enhances brain function, improving focus, memory, and cognitive health.
With its many benefits, it’s no surprise mahjong is experiencing a resurgence in popularity!
