Angela Buikema
Biography
Angela is the founder of Mahjong Mischief LLC, where she blends her expertise in corporate training, project management, and interior design to create engaging, visually inspired learning experiences. With over two decades of experience producing conferences and professional development events, she brings a rare combination of organization, creativity, and warmth to every class she leads.
Before founding Mahjong Mischief, Angela designed and managed training programs for corporate and nonprofit audiences, honing a deep understanding of how adults learn—and how environment influences focus and confidence. That insight now shapes her approach to mah jongg instruction. Whether planning a large-scale event or setting up a teaching table, Angela ensures that every learning experience feels structured yet relaxed, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed.
Her foundation in interior design enhances her sense of composition and detail, from the way she arranges a classroom to the atmosphere she cultivates for her students. She believes the learning environment matters—that when people feel comfortable and inspired, they absorb information more easily and connect more deeply.
Growing up as an only child, Angela learned to practice and master games independently. Today, she teaches her students how to do the same—encouraging independent practice, creative thinking, and finding opportunities to play between lessons to build skill and confidence.
Through Mahjong Mischief LLC, Angela has introduced many new players to the game and continues to grow a vibrant mah jongg community across Chicago’s western suburbs. Her mission is to make mah jongg accessible, beautiful, and socially meaningful—helping people not just learn the rules but rediscover the joy of gathering, thinking strategically, and playing with purpose.
Outside the classroom, Angela finds joy in reading, travel, and music. She can often be found enjoying live performances—or taking the stage herself with her band.
