Stacie Oates
Biography
Stacie is the founder and lead instructor of The Mahj Collective, a Texas-based mah jongg community dedicated to teaching, playing, and celebrating the timeless game of American mah jongg. What began as a personal passion quickly grew into a mission: to modernize how people learn, play, and connect through mah jongg—one tile at a time.
After falling in love with the game herself, Stacie recognized its power to bring people together. With a background in marketing, communications, and event management, she created The Mahj Collective to make mah jongg approachable, social, and stylish. Through her signature classes—Mahjong 101 for beginners and Mahjong 102 for advancing players—Stacie introduces students to the rules, rhythm, and strategy of the game in a stress-free, engaging, and confidence-building environment.
Known for her patience, southern charm, and impeccable organization, Stacie brings everything needed to the table—literally. From tiles and mats to cards and custom handouts, she ensures every student can focus on learning and having fun. Her goal is simple: for each player to leave her class not just knowing how to play, but truly loving the game.
Beyond her in-person lessons, Stacie has grown The Mahj Collective into a vibrant brand that includes community leagues, open play sessions, and themed events like “Mahj-o-Ween” and “Mahj & Martinis.” She also designs digital learning tools and mah jongg-inspired merchandise, blending creativity, connection, and chic style into every venture.
A proud Texan and lifelong community builder, Stacie lives on her family’s ranch in Lavaca County with her husband, Stephen, and their son, Ranger. When she’s not teaching or hosting, she’s creating new resources, connecting with fellow enthusiasts online, or planning her next mah jongg retreat.
At her core, Stacie believes mah jongg is more than a game—it’s a joyful, meaningful way to connect, unwind, and celebrate life’s moments together.
