MPI AMJ Quest Rules Trek

The American Mah Jongg (AMJ) Quest Rules Trek is a course that will help you prepare to take an exam that proves your knowledge of the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules. The course includes a study guide and monthly 1-hour Q&A sessions, where you can confirm your understanding of the rules and ask questions. After Q&A sessions and independent study, you can take an exam with scenarios that may occur during a game played using NMJL rules. You must select the correct answer from a multiple-choice list of possible answers. You pass the exam with 80% or better, and you will earn a microbadge and a digital Certificate of Competency.

Each Mahj Life Merit Program trek is self-paced and practical, designed to help you learn, apply, and prove your knowledge. All exams and assignments are open-book—intentionally structured to support real-world learning, especially for adults returning to study. The focus is not memorization but building confidence, understanding, and applying what you’ve learned. Earning the microbadge means you’ve demonstrated true proficiency, not just passed a test.

 Here are the trek objectives: 

• Demonstrate understanding of the official NMJL rules
• Analyze complex game scenarios and apply the appropriate NMJL rules to ensure correct gameplay and scoring.
• Distinguish between house rules and official NMJL rules to help players understand the differences.

The exam format is multiple-choice, featuring gameplay scenarios, with a passing grade of 80%. The content for the exam is sourced from Mah Jongg Made Easy, the official guidebook by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), and Mahj Life materials created by Michele Frizzell, a seasoned expert with over 50 years of experience in playing various versions of mah jongg and other mind-sport games.

Prerequisites

Participants must be enrolled in the Merit Program for Instructors.
