Beat the Pro

The Beat the Pro Challenge is a let’s play livestream on the Mahj Life YouTube channel on Fridays from 6:00 to 8:00 PM ET. The challenge season runs from January to the end of October to keep the challenge in the calendar year. Winners will be eligible to participate in the annual Mahj Life INVITATIONAL, a virtual mini-tournament held on the FIRST Saturday in November. Entry fees will fund the prize pool, including cash awards for the top six players. The greater the participation, the more prizes awarded.
Prerequisite
Participants must download and install Epoch, their full-featured laptop/desktop application. Mac users: Watch this tutorial https://tinyurl.com/4ddsz8vd. If you have trouble, contact [email protected] for assistance. Once installed, players must register for an account/subscription.
NOTE: A paid account is not required. However, dragon chips (e.g., in-game currency) are needed to play games with humans. When players join a table to play with humans, they pay an entry fee (e.g., anti) in the form of dragon chips. Players with a free subscription get enough dragon chips to play about four games per day. Players with paid subscriptions get more dragon chips, so there should be plenty to play with. When you win, you are rewarded with dragon chips and points – the more you win, the more you can play! Learn more here: https://mahjlife.com/mahjong-time/
Process
- Register to play at the table; first come, first served—no attempt limit.
- Come to the livestream and let me know you are present by saying hi in chat
- Listen for the table name (e.g., Beat the Pro #)
- Leave the livestream; you are welcome to return after the game
- Log into Mahjong Time and join the table; video demonstration (watch time 5 min)
- Play to Beat the Pro!
Seating Priority
If no registered players attend, we’ll default to a Simply Social format, including gameplay with commentary. Players will be seated in rotation: after each round, others will take their turn, following this priority:
- Pre-registered contestants
- Pre-registered winner’s circle members; first come, first served*
- Drop-in winner’s circle members; first come, first served*
*Since the challenge has a 2-season cycle, if a winner’s circle member has not beat the pro in the current season, they will be seated before those who have. The goal is to give everyone a chance to beat the pro in the current season.
Beating the pro gave me a boost to my confidence. If you haven’t tried, do so. It’s a little scary, but the reward is great if you win.
