American Mah Jongg World Record Volunteers

Thank You for Your Willingness to Help

We’re truly grateful for your interest in volunteering with the 48-hour mah jongg marathon world record attempt. This event depends on passionate, dedicated volunteers like you, and we couldn’t pursue this effort without community members stepping forward to support us. Your time, energy, and commitment are meaningful — not only to us, but to everyone who values the integrity and success of this attempt.

Each volunteer plays a vital role in helping us maintain the accuracy and credibility required for an official record submission. Thank you for considering this commitment and for being part of something exciting and memorable.

What to Expect

This event depends on structured and reliable volunteer teams to support a true Guinness World Record attempt. These roles are formal, essential, and documented — not symbolic. What you do contributes directly to the official record submission.

Volunteer Roles

Witnesses must:

  • Be fully independent (not affiliated with players, event organizers, or the venue)
  • Have working knowledge of the National Mah Jongg League rules (e.g., advanced player, experienced instructor, tournament director)
  • Serve a 4-hour shift, then off for 4
  • Observe continuously and attentively
  • Submit a detailed written statement*
  • Maintain or verify logbook entries*

Time Keepers must:

  • Have experience keeping time accurately (e.g., sports coach, tournament director)
  • Serve a 4-hour shift, then off for 4 hours
  • Use precise timing devices throughout their shift
  • Submit an official timekeeper statement*

Shift Rotation

To fully staff the 48-hour continuous marathon, we follow a structured and disciplined rotation schedule designed to maintain accuracy, alertness, and documentation integrity.

Total event duration: 48 hours
Shift length: 4 hours
Required rest between shifts: 4 hours minimum; 12 hours planned if we have four teams

At all times, the event will be staffed by:
2 Independent Witnesses
2 Timekeepers

Volunteers will serve in structured teams of four (2 Witnesses and 2 Timekeepers). We plan to assemble four rotating teams to provide continuous coverage. Each team will serve three non-consecutive 4-hour shifts over the 48-hour period. With four teams in rotation, volunteers will have approximately a 4-hour rest window between shifts, ensuring adequate recovery time and sustained attentiveness throughout the event.

Because the event runs continuously without interruption, this rotation model ensures consistent coverage while allowing volunteers sufficient rest to remain attentive and accurate throughout their shifts. To support this structure, we will also designate a small number of Alternates for both Witness and Timekeeper roles. Alternates must meet the same qualifications and independence requirements as primary volunteers and may be called upon to step in if needed to maintain seamless documentation.

By volunteering, I understand that I may be assigned to a structured team and scheduled for up to three non-consecutive 4-hour shifts during the 48-hour event.

You will be added to the mailing list so you can get information about the BEAT THE PRO Challenge and virtual invitational mini-tournaments.
