Learning Lab Mentor Agreement

We appreciate your interest in serving as a Mentor in the Mahj Life Learning Lab. Mentors are experienced instructors who volunteer their time and expertise to support junior instructors (Resident Instructors) and help guide the culture and direction of the Mahj Life community.

Mentorship is a leadership opportunity that provides meaningful support to others while earning credits toward annual Instructor Guild dues, exclusive courses, and other continuing education offerings.

Eligibility Criteria

To serve as a Mahj Life Learning Lab Mentor, you must have earned the AMJ Quest Rules Trek microbadge through the Merit Program for Instructors.

Exceptions may be granted at the discretion of the Guild Leader for instructors who demonstrate excellence, leadership, or significant contributions to Mahj Life programs.

The program supports up to six active mentors at a time. If all mentor positions are currently filled, additional applicants will be added to a waiting list. As openings arise, the Guild Leader will extend invitations based on alignment with program needs, past contributions, and availability.

Mentor Role and Responsibilities

Mentors provide guidance, encouragement, and feedback to less experienced instructors and community members. In this capacity, you agree to:

  1. Provide Peer-Based Support
Offer advice, answer questions, and guide Associate Instructors using Mahj Life standards and the Mahj Life Wiki as your reference.
  2. Facilitate Weekly Power Hours
Lead or co-lead scheduled Monday Power Hours in rotation with other mentors, focusing on trending questions, player confidence, and group dynamics.
  3. Contribute Constructive Lesson Feedback
Review teaching videos or lesson plans submitted by Associate Instructors. Provide clear, respectful suggestions to help improve instruction quality and clarity.
  4. Moderate the Facebook Learning Lab
Serve as a group admin in the Mahj Life Learning Lab Facebook group. Monitor discussions, ensure accurate rule references, and contribute to creating a positive learning environment.
  5. Engage in Quarterly Mentor Roundtables
Attend and participate in quarterly strategy calls with the Guild Leader and fellow mentors to review trends, troubleshoot challenges, and enhance the group’s impact.

Terms of Participation

As part of our support system, we track mentor contributions through a Credit Ledger to compensate you for your time. The credit ledger is visible only to the Guild leader. Also, you’re not expected to max out credits—just to contribute consistently in a way that fits your capacity.

We have two options to help us recognize your involvement and ensure alignment with our compensation budget.

Option 1: Ongoing Term

Track your activity weekly and accrue credits as you serve.

  • A Credit Ledger Excel workbook (admin view only) will be used to track credit activity.
  • Mentors may review their workbook and request credit redemptions by email (care@mahjlife.com).
  • Credit balances will be monitored and shared on an individual basis.

Option 2: One-Year Term

Prefer a more straightforward path? Opt into a one-year mentor commitment and receive 360 credits upfront. This reflects the same value as weekly tracking across 12 months – you just don’t have to track your activity.

If something changes:
If you’re unable to fulfill the whole year, let us know. We’ll adjust your credit balance accordingly—no penalty, just transparency.By serving as a Mahj Life Mentor, you agree to:

  • Maintain a professional and respectful tone in all interactions
  • Adhere to Mahj Life standards and use the Mahj Life Wiki as your reference for answering questions
  • Maintain the credit ledger to report activity
  • Work in good faith with fellow mentors to uphold a positive and growth-oriented culture

A Credit Ledger Excel workbook will be sent to you via email.

Agreement Acknowledgment

By continuing in your role as a Mahj Life Learning Lab Mentor, you acknowledge that you understand the responsibilities, benefits, and expectations outlined above. This agreement is subject to updates as the program evolves, and you will be notified of any changes.

We appreciate your commitment to monitoring the Facebook group, teaching, peer coaching, and building a thriving Mah Jongg learning community.
