How Can We Help?
THE LEAGUE ON HOUSE RULES AND VARIATIONS (Article 50)
Commentary: House rules modify official game rules that individual groups adopt to suit their preferences better. These adjustments may involve removing, altering, or adding rules. Some players modify official rules to address elements they find too challenging, unengaging, or unfair, tailoring the game to their needs. Others tighten the official rules to clarify ambiguities, create structure, and ensure fairness. When a group decides to use house rules, they should clearly define them in advance and establish a plan for handling issues. Since every group is unique, house rules may be interpreted or enforced differently. As a result, no universal standard exists, and each group is ultimately responsible for managing its dynamics.

Question from a player: What should we do if we are playing with a house rule and have a disagreement about it?
Answer from the NMJL: It is the opinion of the NMJL that table rules regarding the play are not conducive to the game and can only lead to arguments and unpleasant differences of interpretation. Roll the dice to break the wall. Do not pick in advance. Do not play hot or cold wall.
