Commentary: House rules can create challenges in the community, especially for beginners. A house rule is any modification to the official game rules that a group adopts to better suit its preferences. These changes may involve removing, altering, or adding rules.

Some groups adjust official rules to make the game less challenging, more engaging, or more balanced for their players. Others tighten the rules to clarify ambiguities, create structure, and promote fairness.

Whenever a group chooses to play with house rules, they should define them clearly in advance and agree on how to handle disputes. Because each group is autonomous, house rules can be interpreted or enforced differently. There is no universal standard—each group determines its own outcomes.

Question from a player:  What should we do if we are playing with a house rule and have a disagreement about it?

Answer from the NMJL It is the opinion of the NMJL that table rules regarding the play are not conducive to the game and can only lead to arguments and unpleasant differences of interpretation.  Roll the dice to break the wall.   Do not pick in advance.  Do not play hot or cold wall.

NOTICE:
When a group chooses to play with house rules, its members are responsible for establishing the specific logistics, rules, and penalties that apply. Because these can vary widely from one group to another, players should always ask about the group culture before joining a game for the first time.
