The Four Pillars of Sportsmanship

Sportsmanship is the foundation of a positive and rewarding game experience. It goes beyond simply following the rules—it is about how we treat others at the table and uphold the integrity of the game. The four pillars of sportsmanship—fairness, integrity, accountability, and respect—are guiding principles for all players.

Fairness is the commitment to playing by the rules and within established guidelines, ensuring everyone adheres to the same standards.  It means applying the official rules consistently and refraining from actions that give an unfair advantage. Fairness also involves recognizing and accepting victories and losses gracefully, fostering an environment where competition remains enjoyable and honorable.

Integrity is the commitment to honesty and ethical play, even when no one is watching. Players should adhere to the spirit of the game, not just the letter of the rules. This includes making honest calls, avoiding behaviors that compromise trust, and consistently demonstrating principled behavior. Integrity builds credibility within the community and ensures that the game remains a test of skill and strategy rather than deception.

Accountability is taking responsibility for one’s actions and decisions at the table. A good player acknowledges mistakes, makes corrections when necessary, and accepts the consequences of their choices. This also extends to commitments such as showing up on time, being prepared, and respecting the flow of the game.

Respect is the foundation of a positive playing environment. Treating opponents courteously, communicating effectively, and fostering an inclusive atmosphere are essential for respect. Players should also show respect for the game by maintaining focus, avoiding unnecessary disruptions, and appreciating the efforts of others. Recognizing good play, even from opponents, helps reinforce a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship.

A Note for Players

As you continue your journey to master the game, let the Four Pillars of Sportsmanship—fairness, integrity, accountability, and respect— guide your play. Respect your fellow players, the game, and its traditions. Uphold integrity by playing honestly and with good intent. Embrace fairness, ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone at the table. Most importantly, commit to growth, refining your skills and deepening your understanding with every hand. By embodying these principles, you contribute to a welcoming and vibrant community where every game is an opportunity to learn, connect, and excel.

A Note for Group Leaders

As a group leader, you set the tone for a positive and enriching experience. By upholding the Four Pillars of Sportsmanship—fairness, integrity, accountability, and respect—you create an environment where players feel welcomed, challenged, and inspired. Foster a culture of respect by encouraging open communication and mutual appreciation. Lead with integrity, ensuring that rules are followed consistently and in the spirit of the game. Promote fairness by balancing competitiveness with camaraderie. Above all, champion growth helps players refine their skills and deepen their understanding. Your leadership shapes the game and the community—one where everyone can play confidently and with fulfillment.

A Note for Instructors

As an instructor, you play a vital role in shaping the learning environment. Integrating the Four Pillars of Sportsmanship—fairness, integrity, accountability, and respect—into your lessons creates a positive and engaging atmosphere that enhances your students’ growth. Emphasizing these values fosters a culture of trust and mutual respect, empowering students to develop as players and individuals. Instilling these principles elevates the quality of gameplay and strengthens your ability to lead by example, inspiring a sense of camaraderie and pride among your students.
